　　Stereopsis, a word formed from the Greek word stereos, or solid, shows us the world in a very different way, with volume. We are able to, as Dr. Susan Barry has written, “see the air and space between things,” determine with high accuracy where things are, and see how far away they are end see the world in a more beautiful way!

　　In the chapter entitled Stereo Sue, in his book The Mind’s Eye, Oliver Sacks tells the story of an ophthalmologist, Dr. Paul Romano, who lost one eye to disease, and thus lost his binocularity and stereopsis. Dr. Romano wrote about his experiences in Binocular Vision and Strabismus Quarterly. I think his remarks are appropriate for this chapter, as those of us with the good fortune of having binocularity find it difficult to understand how amazing it is, unless we lose it as was his case.

　　“After thirty-five days without binocular vision, in spite of the fact that every day I adapt more to monocularity, I cannot imagine spending the rest of my life this way… The perception of binocular stereoscopic vision is not just a visual phenomenon. It is a way of life… living in a two-dimensional world is very different from life in a three-dimensional world, and much inferior.”

　　“在失去双眼视的35天里，我已经慢慢适应了一只眼睛的生活，但是我难以想象，以后要这样度过余生...拥有立体视，不仅仅是有更好的视觉效果，更是一种生活方式。在二维平面的世界中生活，完全不能和三维立体世界相比，生活质量是非常差的。”

　　Of course, you can live and function without binocularity, but the benefits and, above all, the security we get from having stereopsis and seeing in 3D is something we can never get from the sense of depth provided solely by monocular clues.

　　当然，没有双眼视也能生活，但是立体视觉带来的安全感、3D画面的美妙，这些仅凭单眼线索，是无法达到的。

　　I cannot imagine great soccer players such as Messi, Ronaldo, or great baseball players such as Hank Aaron or other high-level athletes in sports such as gymnastics, tennis, golf, basketball etc. without stereopsis. It is that which gives us the possibility to play to the best of our potential.
